South African David Perel, Kessel Ferrari driver, has clincheed the Blancpain Sprint AM Championship at the penultimate round of the series in Hungary over the weekend of 26 August.
Says David: “We had one aim this weekend and it was simply to finish the first race in order to clinch the championship. The start of our weekend was tough but in the end we managed to do it!”
This marks the first time a South African has won a championship in the world’s most competitive GT3 series – but Perel is not done yet, as he’s still in the hunt for the Endurance and Overall titles.
“My primary aim this year was to win the Endurance Championship but a last minute agreement with my team meant I’d also compete in the Sprint Cup. That meant I would be eligible for the overall title as well.”
“This is a huge achievement for me personally and I’m just massively proud to be representing South Africa in such a competitive series. My focus will now switch to winning the overall AM title at the next round in Germany.”
The final round of the Sprint Championship will take place in three weeks’ time at the famous Nurburgring circuit, where Perel needs just one point to take overall honours.
